Why Us?

I remember seeing people sleeping on the streets of downtown as a young child riding in the car with my parents. I wondered why they were sleeping on the cold, hard streets. Something was wrong with this picture. I had a comfortable bed to sleep in, so I assumed that everyone else had the same. The harsh reality unfolded as I became more curious. It became clear to me that maybe these people didn’t necessarily want to sleep on the streets; perhaps many of them had to because they lost their homes and had nowhere else to go. The thought that human beings were lying their heads on the same ground where trash was thrown, saddened me. I was only in the third grade, but I wanted to do something about it.

A few years back, my aunt in Wisconsin founded and operated a transitional facility for troubled youth who were runaways or society’s throwaways. She offered them a place of refuge where they could call home and receive the support needed to make the most of their broken lives. My aunt’s passion and action towards helping the youth of Milwaukee gave me the inspiration and direction that I needed. Since I was age eight, the idea of making it my life’s mission to help poor people became a seed planted in me. Throughout my teenage and young adult years I watered this seed by volunteering at homeless shelters, visiting with homeless people on the streets, and by randomly giving them money and food. This seed is now called Tyson Angel Heart.

Since incorporation in April of 2009, TAH has served hundreds of homeless and unfortunate families through community outreach. We have successfully raised funds, held drives, and have supported other homeless shelters. With inspiration from my aunt and my God-given vision, TAH will continue to be a pillar of support for the homeless community. Our goal is to open a transitional facility equipped with resources to help homeless single-parent families become self-sustained.
